Find a Digital TV Station Near You

The digital TV station industry has become the target of some federal requirements that will affect how they transmit television signals. Congress has made a mandate which orders all digital broadcasting, and this mandate is known as the digital TV transition mandate. The requirements of this mandate allow for a transition period, from the year 2003 when the mandate was passed until February 17, 2009 at midnight. During this transition period, almost all broadcasters will transmit in both digital and analog formats, to help consumers during the transition period and to ensure that new equipment will not have to be purchased immediately if it is needed. After midnight on February 17, 2009, no more analog signals will be broadcast, only all digital format on the airwaves. This mandate was passed because of the fact that digital transmission is a more efficient technology, and it allows broadcast stations to provide a higher quality of sound and picture, plus it allows broadcasters to provide a wider range of programming options for their consumers with multicasting, which is the ability to transmit more than one program on the same channel space. The use of all digital broadcasting will allow many frequencies to be freed up for public safety use, like fire, police, and emergency rescue personnel. This will ensure adequate space for safety personnel without compromising the viewing ability for consumers, and without compromising any public safety. All digital broadcasting will also allow extra commercial wireless services that are advanced to become available to consumers. Digital broadcasts offer a large number of advantages over the old traditional analog TV. If you use an analog TV with free programming through an antenna, then you may have to purchase a TV set that has a DTV receiver installed, or a separate box receiver to decode the digital signals before the end of the transition period.
